I love learning about the ecology of different bugs, whether they are beneficial or pesty!
Gardens are great places to look at ecology and diversity, but especially for insects. The variety of plants, habitats and features means you can see so much in such a small space. I love learning about the ecology of different bugs, whether they are beneficial or pesty! As an undergraduate I studied biology – focusing on ecology, conservation and environment. Then for my PhD I got into entomology by starting with macro-moths, studying their flight ability. Moths are still my favourites but it’s great being an entomologist for the RHS because I get to look at a huge range of insects and other animals that appear in gardens too. My current research projects are the agapanthus gall midge and control of slugs and snails in gardens.
