Enjoy a compact, yet elegant, Japanese cedar to brighten an autumn view...
This is the time of year when
Cryptomeria start to come into their own. As the temperatures drop the fine feathery foliage begins to turn from its zingy summer green to rusty bronze and even purple tones after a really cold spell.
Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans Compacta’ is particularly suited to the smaller garden, having a much neater and rounded habit than the straight form.

As well as its exciting ability to change colour with the weather conditions, the fine texture of the plant adds another dimension to the winter interest planting scheme that it is part of, looking particularly fantastic on a bright dewy day when water droplets glisten like diamonds in the sun. A must have for a winter interest garden.
At
Harlow Carr they nestle between
Cornus and other winter interest plants on the Winter Walk. They look just as great with heathers too. But some plants are simply so special that they don’t need to rely on planting partners – the form and foliage of
Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans Compacta’ is so attractive that it's wonderful just on its own.
