Something for everyone

Our Events Manager gives an insight into upcoming events

Working within the events team in any organisation means that you are always looking into the future. This is never truer than at the RHS when creating seasonal events that complement and enhance the garden throughout the changing seasons. We work 18 months ahead most of the time so I am just in the process of confirming all of 2017 (phew!).

Here’s a round up of the things we have coming up at RHS Garden Harlow Carr this year...

We have had a successful summer so far, working with the RHS Rocket Science project. Engaging with families we have showcased some out-of-this-world gardening, including air planters, a hydroponic display, and the results from growing rocket seeds that have been to space and back earlier in the year.

Throughout the summer we have also had several horticultural shows with our first RHS Garden Harlow Carr Flower Show, and smaller Sweet Pea and Orchid Shows. Summer here is also a perfect opportunity to see the garden in a different light with music, outdoor theatre and late evening opening.

There is lots planned for autumn and we are hoping for an Indian summer! Our plans start with an Autumn Plant Festival and Tender Plant Show, followed by our Real Ale & Cider Weekend in September with local brewers – and this year a local winery, too.

We have also been working hard on planning a fantastic Food & Wood Festival with local suppliers, fantastic wood crafts, and partnering with Stihl to demonstrate the best in portable gardening kit.

Autumn continues with an Alpine weekend and week-long October half term activities celebrating the animals of the night. All these events offer a good excuse to take a walk among the beautiful autumnal colours of the garden.

Most people groan when you talk about Christmas in August, but not us! This really is the season to be jolly as it is jam-packed full of events for all, including activities to encourage everyone to pull on their coats and hats and visit the garden during the winter months.

Everyday throughout December children can take part in our Christmas Trail and have their photos taken with our resident penguins and polar bears. Then on our extra-special Magic of Christmas days, families can come and make our Christmas Eve packs including a Christmas Eve plate, cookie and a thank you letter for Santa, and some magical reindeer food. Santa is here for those dates too and a storytelling session with him can be pre-booked from 1 September.

For all of our visitors, winter is an opportunity to experience the amazing Winter Walk, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Sneak a kiss under our giant mistletoe sculpture before calling into the Plant Centre for one of our Shopping Showcase weekends to pick a host of Christmas wares and samples.

Winter continues into 2017 with plans for a Grow and Show Weekend, teaching amateurs and experts alike how to get the best out of their seasonal produce, as well as a weekend celebrating the very best of a winter garden with tips, walks and demos.

As you can see we have a jam-packed few months at Harlow Carr; we do hope you take the time to join us.  For more information visit the Harlow Carr What's on page
