A trip to the French Alps with the Alpine Garden Society opened my eyes to some of the exciting opportunities to be had as a horticulturist and introduced me to the RHS and it’s many and varied facets
Since retiring from a long term career as an aircraft engineer and at the same time being a keen amateur gardener, a second career in horticulture seemed a natural transition for me to make.
Having gained basic NVQ’s in horticulture and acted as a volunteer at Cawdor Castle whilst in my previous career, in 2011 I was taken on by The National Trust for Scotland and began their 2 year full time traineeship at Threave Gardens School of Heritage Gardening in Dumfries and Galloway. Having completed my first year, I moved on to Inverewe Gardens in Wester Ross to complete my second year of studies. This proved to be an excellent springboard into the industry.
I continued with the NTS, this time as an employee at Leith Hall in Aberdeenshire, gaining valuable experience in a challenging environment and allowing me to investigate potential specialisations and specific interests. I have been with the RHS as a member of the Formal Gardens team here at Rosemoor since May 2015 and am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that are already presenting themselves and am thoroughly enjoying settling in to what is a friendly, hardworking and dynamic team.
