For me, horticulture is all about plants, what they are, where they come from, how they adapt to their environment
From a young age I have always had a fascination for natural history, and being brought up with a big garden there was always the opportunity for exploration and later on growing a wide range of plants. After attending college at Askam Bryan and then Cannington College, the highlight in my training culminated at the Edinburgh Botanic Garden with the completion of the Diploma in Horticulture. This led to a year working at the Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia which gave a wonderful opportunity to immerse myself in the native flora there and learn about a whole range of plants that are beyond the scope of Britain’s temperate climate. Prior to working for the RHS, I was Head Gardener at Haddo House one of the properties of the National Trust for Scotland. At Rosemoor I am the Team Leader for Lady Anne’s Garden. Throughout the garden there is a tremendous range of plants that are used to show off the garden to its very best. For me gardening or horticulture is all about plants, what they are, where they come from, how they adapt to their environment in the wild state and in cultivation, and how they can be used in a cultivated environment to bring education and enjoyment to other people.
