Garden volunteers help us to keep the high horticultural standards for which we are world famous. Their support enhances the work of the garden teams at all four of our gardens – RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Yorkshire, RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex, RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon and RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey.
Family events & schools visits
RHS Gardens are renowned for engaging thousands of children every year with horticultural activities. Family Events Volunteers assist the Education and Learning Team with the preparation, set up and delivery of workshops and activities. School Visit Volunteers assist with visits from groups of school children, including meeting & greeting, and delivery of tours and activities.
We have a number of Visitor Services roles at our gardens, and at some sites roles are combined.
Mobility Vehicle Volunteer Drivers enable our less able volunteers to see all the important garden features.
Volunteer Tour Guides deliver garden tours, interpreting the garden and its history.
Membership Recruitment Volunteers answer visitor queries about membership, and to recruit new RHS members.
Welcome Volunteers provide Wisley visitors with a warm welcome on arrival.
Volunteers helping our science teams, based at RHS Garden Wisley, support all areas of our scientific work. Many science volunteers are scientists or horticulturists themselves who enjoy sharing their expertise with the RHS to enhance their careers, or to continue with their passion following retirement.
Library & Reading Room
Library Volunteers assist in the cataloguing, filing and archiving of all books and collections. Library & Reading Room Volunteers also assist our visitors with accessing books, magazines and other information.
An army of volunteers assist us at our busy shows each year. Show volunteering opportunities are advertised on our website on the Volunteering Vacancies page. Many of our Shows volunteers have been helping us for years, but we also open up opportunities for new people to help so keep an eye on the vacancies page for details if you are interested.
Administration – office work
Administration Volunteers can assist staff with mailings, update spread sheets, input several types of data onto RHS database including address updates, activity logging, and other administrative office work. Some computer skills and knowledge of filing and administrative tasks preferred.
From 2014 we are delighted to offer corporate groups the opportunity to volunteer at some RHS Gardens. If you would like to arrange a Corporate Volunteering Day at one of our Gardens please email email@example.com . Volunteering at an RHS Garden is a great team building opportunity, as well as a chance for your employees to get some fresh air, work with nature and support the charitable aims of the RHS.
